An emotionally charged film set in the stark and beautiful landscape of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The Outrun touches on the struggles of Alcoholism and addictions, showing the ways it can get deeply embedded in to your life. It comes off as very soulful and touching, especially when you have any kind of personal stake in it.

The story is non-linear, in the way that it intermixes lead character Rona's life in the present with flashbacks of her past while struggling with an alcohol problem that has ruined her career and relationships. It follows her journey through rehab to moving back home and taking on a job in nature conservatory while fighting to stay sober.

Throughout the film there is a unique voice over from Rona detailing the folklore of the Orkney Islands, nature/the earth and addiction among other things. The Outrun is titled as drama film but it comes off like a nature documentary many times throughout the nearly 2 hour run time. The documentary feel adds a real touch to the drama of the movie.

It's both visually gorgeous and masterfully edited but both of those pale in comparison to the phenomenal award winning performance by Saoirse Ronan.

RUN, don't walk!

4/5
